Breheny Civil Engineering delivers two major projects for Sizewell C
Suffolk-based contractor Breheny Civil Engineering has delivered two major roundabouts on the A12 at Friday Street and Yoxford as part of Sizewell C’s off-site infrastructure programme.
As the primary contractor carrying out the works, Breheny oversaw the project from full site clearance through to the opening of the roundabouts in time for the Easter weekend. These roundabouts will significantly support travel across East Suffolk by improving safety, reducing traffic congestion, and enhancing access to the Sizewell C construction site. Final works for Breheny include removing the old stetch of the A12, set to be completed in July 2026, in addition to landscaping the surrounding areas, which will take place in November 2026.

Chris Frost, Contract Manager at Breheny Civil Engineering, said: “Working on an infrastructure project like Sizewell C is fantastic. It’s a major project for the UK and, having it here in the East of England has not only provided us with the opportunity to showcase our capabilities, but also enabled locally based businesses we have contracted to demonstrate what they can do.”
“As a local business ourselves, we naturally gravitate towards subcontracting local businesses for the projects we lead on. With Sizewell C’s commitment to local supply chain spend, it has provided us with the opportunity to subcontract local businesses to support the works, including Toppesfield, who carried out the resurfacing of the roundabouts, as well as Tru7, who provided additional plant hire support.”
Working on the Sizewell C project means much more to Breheny Civil Engineering than simply building infrastructure. The company has also been able to support long-term development by employing apprentices.
Chris said: “It’s embedded in our culture to take on a pool of apprentices each year anyway, but our activity related to Sizewell C has really encouraged us to expand this further. It’s a fantastic opportunity for individuals coming into the industry.
“We’ve taken on five apprentices this year, three specifically for Sizewell C: two junior plant operative apprentices and one civil engineering apprentice.”
Breheny’s civil engineering apprentice, Kiara Hazelton, is currently working towards her HNC (Higher National Certificate) in Civil Engineering.
Discussing her experience, Kiara said: “Working on Sizewell C at both Yoxford and Friday Street with Breheny has been a really rewarding experience. Being part of such a major infrastructure project at the beginning of my career has given me the opportunity to learn new skills every day and gain hands-on experience. I’m proud to be part of such a significant project so early in my career.”
Working on the Sizewell C project has been a full-circle moment for Breheny Civil Engineering, with the organisation previously involved in the Sizewell B project during the 1980s.
Robin Percy, AOMR (Asset Operation, Maintenance, and Response) National Framework Manager at Breheny Civil Engineering, said: “I was involved in the enabling works for Sizewell B back in 1987 as Breheny’s Site Agent for the widening of the B1122 from the A12 junction at Yoxford up to the site entrance.
“Now, still working for Breheny almost 40 years later, it is interesting to see how things have evolved, particularly around procedures and new technologies. It is good that Breheny, as a local contractor, is once again contributing successfully to the early works connected with a major nuclear project on the East Suffolk coast.”
As the project continues to develop, Breheny is also focused on its own development, with a strong emphasis on progressing the next generation of civil engineers and plant operators. This will not only support the Sizewell C project, but also the future of other major infrastructure projects as part of the long-term legacy created by the Sizewell C build.
Reflecting on his time on the project, Chris’ advice to other businesses was: “Be proactive. This is a great opportunity for businesses, so make sure you are being proactive across the whole business. Upskill your workforce, invest in the future generation of civil engineers, attend job fairs and invest in your local talent pools.
“Also, be proactive across your supply chain. The supply chain team at the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce has played a pivotal role in supporting us with our enquiries. We recently exhibited at the Tier 1 Supply Chain Exhibition, which they hosted on behalf of Sizewell C, and events like this open businesses up to a wide range of opportunities to build connections with organisations working not only on the Sizewell C project, but also on projects across the UK.”
As a result of its successful work, Breheny Civil Engineering was awarded a Sizewell C Contract Partner Award earlier this year.
