Sizewell C: Announcement of Government Investment

“It has been a year of significant progress for the Sizewell C Project. Today marks another huge milestone with the UK Government Investment Decision (GID). We are delighted to confirm that Rt Hon Grant Shapps MP, Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy visited Sizewell yesterday and confirmed the investment announced in the Autumn Statement earlier this month.

The Government’s £679m investment in Sizewell C will support the project’s continued development. EDF will also provide additional investment to match the Government’s stake in the project. The Government will work with the project company to seek to attract new third-party investment to finance its construction and operation. The investment also allows for China General Nuclear’s (CGN) exit from the project.

In the coming months we will be undertaking a combination of physical work, design studies and attracting the investment which will lead to a Final Investment Decision (FID). We are building a Marsh Harrier Habitat to the north of the temporary construction site and carrying out other ecological mitigation work. Archaeological surveys will also continue, and we will start some trenchwork for our associated developments. Other works include design and approvals of the associated developments, ground anchor trials and feasibility studies.

Following the decision in July to grant Development Consent for Sizewell C (when the Secretary of State followed the guidance from the Planning Inspectorate’s Examination Authority to the letter and granted consent), Sizewell C now has an approved design, planning and the finance in place to make solid progress toward FID. The Project has also been successful in being designated as a suitable project for Regulated Asset Base financing.

Sizewell C will generate low carbon electricity for 6 million homes. Our supply chain strategy will see 70% of the value of the project’s construction and operations contracts being placed with UK businesses, creating and supporting thousands of well-paid jobs in Suffolk and across the UK’s national nuclear industry. Recent activities and the ongoing early works on site have resulted in over £10 million of contracts for local businesses.

Both the Government and the Labour Party support Sizewell C. Recent ICM polling in East Suffolk found 61% support for Sizewell C from across the district.
